Description
ABOUT THE PATTERN
The Olympe Cardigan is a variation of the Olympe Vest, reworked here as a cardigan. It is knitted sideways in garter stitch using circular needles.
The construction is simple but a little unusual: you will first knit the back, then the left front, and finally the right front. These three pieces are then joined together. The sleeves are picked up and worked in the round, then finished with ribbed cuffs.
To finish the cardigan, the neckline, button bands and bottom edge are worked in ribbing.
This design was created with leftover yarn in mind. The idea is to use what you already have in your stash and have fun mixing different yarns, textures and colours to create a cardigan that feels completely your own. There are no strict rules here: play with your combinations, change colours whenever you feel like it, and make your version unique.
For the cardigan shown in the photos, I held two strands of yarn together throughout. I used one strand of DROPS Daisy as a base yarn for the entire project, combined with different leftovers from my stash, including Lang Yarns Donegal Tweed+, Wool and the Gang Shiny Happy Cotton and Gabo Wool Cashmerini.
If you prefer to knit your cardigan using a single strand of yarn, choose a bulky/chunky weight yarn that allows you to match the gauge given later in the pattern. Whatever yarn combination you choose, matching the gauge is the most important thing to achieve the intended fit and measurements.
The pattern is suitable for advanced beginners and is also a nice opportunity to learn a few new techniques along the way, such as working buttonholes and an Italian bind-off, which gives the ribbed edges a beautifully neat and stretchy finish.
