WHO ARE YOU?
Hi, I’m Marie-Sol, but my friends call me Marso. I’m a French Canadian who loves surfing and crocheting! A few years ago, I decided to chase my dream of surfing and I left my family home to travel across the country in my van. Living the vanlife was a childhood dream of mine. I loved the idea of a simple, nomadic life and now I’m living that dream. Living in a van brings me lots of happiness, but it also presents the challenge of finding ways to work while traveling. All this time on the road led me to the idea of starting my own crochet brand.

I’m a self-taught crocheter who has mastered techniques through personal exploration and lots of trial and error. I find crocheting amazing because once you know the basics, you can freestyle pretty much everything! The more you do it, the more comfortable you become, and that’s when the magic happens.

I like simple things. I value quality over quantity, so I prefer to buy good quality products rather than cheap ones that need frequent replacement. Living in my van for the past four years has made me realize even more that material things are not so important to me. If I buy something, it’s because I really need it. I enjoy going to markets and thrift stores, and I like to buy from artisans or small sustainable brands. I no longer buy from fast fashion industries and prefer to support small creators like myself.

It all started with a hat—I couldn’t find one I liked in stores, so I made my own. People loved it and started asking for their own, which sparked my passion for creating custom pieces. Every piece I make is truly unique. I take my inspiration from nature and my surroundings. I like to create pieces that represent everyone’s individuality.

I started Marsombrero in 2021, and it gives me the freedom to center my life around my passions. I value our planet Earth, and living outside with nature makes me want to be even more responsible. That’s why sustainability is at the core of Marsombrero—everything I create is handmade by me, and I ensure that every aspect of my brand reflects this commitment to sustainability. From the materials I choose, like eco-friendly yarns and recycled fibers, to the packaging I use, I want to minimize my environmental impact.

As an artist, I keep all of this in mind. My brand is based on custom products, and I recently started to write down my designs. Since then, I’ve been challenging myself with new designs and new items, which has only fueled my creativity further. I write my patterns as simply as possible with pictures to make them easy to follow.
